My extensive United States travel has brought me to 47 states and 20 National Parks, which also means that I’ve stayed in 100+ different hotels, Airbnbs, and hostels along the way.
Having this experience, I know how hit-or-miss booking accommodations can be. A property looks great in the photos, but only to discover otherwise when you arrive. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of misses while crisscrossing America, but I’ve also had a ton of fantastic experiences as well. This is the last of a 4 part breakdown by region of the United States of lodging that I personally recommend.
Keep in mind that I tend to be a budget traveler, so some of these locations might not be a right fit for you. But if you’re anything like me, all you’re really looking for is a place to feel comfortable, safe, and pay a reasonable rate. Below is a list of places that meet this criteria. I only recommend places that I have personally stayed and would stay again.
Here is my list of great lodging options in the Southwest United States!
Flagstaff, Arizona
• Hotel Aspen InnSuites: Flagstaff was where I chose to stay after a day at the Grand Canyon, which is about 1 ½ hours away. The staff was very friendly, the breakfast area had a cool vintage Route 66 theme, and the hotel was a short drive from downtown. Whether you’re visiting the Grand Canyon or driving Route 66, this hotel is a great option.
Las Cruces, New Mexico
• La Quinta Inn: In Las Cruces for a visit to White Sands National Monument? Look no further than this La Quinta Inn. I had a two-night stay here and was shocked at the quality of the hotel for the price. I recommend this property to any Southern New Mexico traveler!
Marfa, Texas
• El Cosmico: my very first glamping experience! Marfa is a small, but artsy town in West Texas — so it would make perfect sense that this bohemian, desert lodging would set up shop here. You have the option of a safari tent, yurt, tepee, or trailer for your unique accommodations. But my favorite feature during the chilly Texas night? My heated mattress!
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
• Extended Stay America: fantastic rate for pretty nice lodging near Oklahoma City. Downtown and all of the major OKC attractions are less than 10 miles away.
Page, Arizona
• Best Western Plus at Lake Powell: prices double and triple in peak season, but that’s common for any remote destination like Page. This hotel is centrally located for all of the area attractions, features spacious rooms, and nice breakfast options.
• Super 8: another great (and slightly cheaper) option when visiting Page, Arizona. The rooms are exceptionally clean and the hotel is within a few minutes of picturesque Horseshoe Bend.
San Antonio, Texas
• Hotel Valencia: I don’t often stay in the heart of a city, but I made an exception when visiting San Antonio. Hotel Valencia is a sophisticated hotel overlooking the famed San Antonio River Walk, also featuring a contemporary American restaurant and a cocktail bar with river views.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
• La Quinta Inn: located about 15 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, this hotel has plenty of restaurants and shopping areas within close proximity. The drive into Santa Fe is an easy one and shouldn’t turn you off from staying here.
Sedona, Arizona
• GreenTree Inn: formerly a Days Inn, I have stayed at this property twice. I have always been pleased with the rooms, friendly staff, and the gorgeous views of Red Rock Country. All worth-while accommodations in Sedona will be expensive, but this property is definitely worthy of a stay when in Sedona.
Tucson, Arizona
• Airbnb – Andrea: Andrea was a great host! She was very friendly and even helped me find a great spot to watch the sunset in Saguaro National Park. Her home is perfectly located to just about everything in Tucson. You’ll especially like her super friendly dog, Mango.
