My extensive United States travel has brought me to 47 states and 20 National Parks, which also means that I’ve stayed in 100+ different hotels, Airbnbs, and hostels along the way.
Having this experience, I know how hit-or-miss booking accommodations can be. A property looks great in the photos, but only to discover otherwise when you arrive. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of misses while crisscrossing America, but I’ve also had a ton of fantastic experiences as well. This is the second of a 4 part breakdown by region of the United States of lodging that I personally recommend.
Keep in mind that I tend to be a budget traveler, so some of these locations might not be a right fit for you. But if you’re anything like me, all you’re really looking for is a place to feel comfortable, safe, and pay a reasonable rate. Below is a list of places that meet this criteria. I only recommend places that I have personally stayed and would stay again.
Here is my list of great lodging options in the Midwest United States!
Medora, North Dakota
• AmericInn Lodge & Suites: there are not a lot of lodging choices in Medora, but you can’t go wrong with AmericInn — a beautiful property, very clean rooms, super friendly staff, and just minutes away from Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Morrill, Nebraska
• Travelodge: known as Oak Tree Inn when I stayed, you can expect nice, budget-friendly accommodations that are perfect if you need a place to rest on a cross-country drive. The closest Nebraska attraction is Scotts Bluff National Monument, only about 20 minutes away.
Rapid City, South Dakota
• Comfort Suites: ranked #1 of all Rapid City area hotels! And I really can’t dispute that. The rates were a little higher than I’m used to paying, but that is common for this area. For the condition of the rooms and location to downtown and attractions like Mount Rushmore & Custer State Park, I would gladly spend the money again!
St. Louis, Missouri
• Red Roof PLUS+: located in the heart of The Hill, a famous Italian neighborhood featuring St Louis’ finest Italian restaurants and home-style bakeries, I was pleasantly surprised to find that just about every attraction in the St. Louis area was 15 minutes away or less.
• Holiday Inn: if you’re looking to stay in downtown St. Louis, then this Holiday Inn is a great option. Located right near the Convention Center and within a reasonable walking distance to the Old Courthouse & Gateway Arch.
Red Roof PLUS+ in St Louis, Missouri
Vincennes, Indiana
• Super 8: another town and hotel that might not be bringing you there for the attractions, but worthy of a spot to lay your head during your Midwest travels or a long cross-country drive.
Willowbrook, Illinois
• Red Roof PLUS+: this particular location is about 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, but don’t let that deter you from staying here. Despite the distance, it was an easy drive into Chicago and, to be honest, I enjoyed escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
