After a 10+ hour drive across South Dakota from Minneapolis, all I desired was a warm bed and a place that felt like home. Comfort Suites Hotel & Convention Center in Rapid City fit that description perfectly!
Rolling into the Comfort Suites parking lot well after 10pm and, after such a long day of travel, all any traveler wants is a speedy check-in and friendly staff – and that’s exactly the treatment I received! Once I had my key cards in hand, I proceeded with my normal ritual of asking the staff for area recommendations. They were very knowledgeable of the Rapid City area and listed many must-see attractions & the best restaurants, including the location of a not-so-public speakeasy in downtown Rapid City. Shhhh, it’s a secret!
Booked for three nights in a 2 Queen Bed Suite, I was greeted with an extremely spacious room that included a living area. Even though the hotel is located right off I-90, I immediately noticed that there was no traffic noise to keep me from enjoying a good night’s rest. The room was equipped with new furniture, plush pillow-top mattresses, and a work desk. Rooms only have one desk but, if I felt like being less formal, I was able to get plenty done thanks to an extra armchair and coffee table in the living area. A definite positive for me was how clean the entire room and bathroom was! You don’t always get that in hotels and I was extremely pleased with the cleanliness and condition of the room.
Since I was in town for the Crazy Horse Autumn Volksmarch, I found that the hotel was very conveniently located to the main road that led to the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore. With many gas stations nearby, it was a breeze to gas up and make the 35-45 minute ride to many of Rapid City’s most famous attractions. As if that wasn’t reason enough to stay at Comfort Suites, the distance to downtown Rapid City was a quick and easy 10 minute drive.
So, if you find yourself in the Rapid City area, I certainly recommend you stay at this hotel. It’s got all the modern amenities and facilitates your connection to the downtown area as well as the surrounding attractions — Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, and beyond. I arrived in Rapid City hoping for a place that felt like home and that’s exactly what I found! Just like their website says: “You’re sure to find all the comforts of home at Comfort Suites Hotel & Convention Center, Rapid City!”
The breakdown:
- Location: Minutes from downtown Rapid City, just off of I-90.
- Clientele: Great for families and business travelers alike.
- Technology: Fast wi-fi, free for an unlimited number of devices.
- Beds: Excellent and plush. Lots of pillows. No problem sleeping for the easy-sleeper and the insomniac.
- Rooms: Very nice size. Can comfortably fit 4 people.
- Amenities: Cable TV, wi-fi, telephone, desk with a proper office chair, couch, armchair, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, indoor pool, jacuzzi, fitness center.
- Bathroom: Plenty of soaps, towels, and a good shower with plenty of hot water.
- Dining: Breakfast is included and features standard continental fare.
- Staff: The entire crew is the best in the business. Very helpful with recommendations.
- Cleanliness: Rooms are very clean. Property kept clean 24/7, inside and out.
- Distractions: None to speak of.
- Attractions: Downtown Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, & Custer State Park.
- Snacks & Such: Countless stores within a couple minutes’ drive, plenty of delivery options.
- Value: If you aren’t there in high season, it’s a score. During high season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), prices can easily be double. However, that’s the norm across the entire area. Highly recommended any time of year.
